Santa Croce and the Memory of the War
A special visit to some spaces that are not part of the normal visitor experience
The Basilica of Santa Croce is a site of memory celebrating the great figures of history but also commemorating the valour of those who fell in the two world wars. This guided tour takes you into certain parts of the monumental complex open specifically for the occasion, allowing you to enter the “famedio”, a funerary mausoleum commemorating important personalities, and the shrine in the undercroft dedicated to those Florentines who gave their lives for their country after 1918. The tour includes the Chapel of the Italian Mother by Libero Andreotti, one of Tuscany’s leading early 20th century artists, and the Park of Remembrance dedicated to recipients of the Gold Medal of Military Valour.
